Tributes have flowed for former alumnus and professor of economics Dr Bruce Felmingham, who died last month.

Dr Felmingham had a strong connection with the University graduating with a Bachelor of Economics with Honours in 1968 and a PhD in 1974. He started as a reader in economics and later became professor, serving the University for more than three decades. He held key roles, including Head of School, and Dean of the then Faculty of Commerce and Law.

He was so favourably regarded that former student Mr Mitchel Martin-Weber personally funded a scholarship, the Dr Bruce Felmingham Scholarship, to honour the positive impact the economics professor had on him. The scholarship aligns with Dr Felmingham’s interests in supporting those living with a disability.

Dr Felmingham was a respected thinker in the community, and as a public academic provided media commentary on key economic issues. He was also well known in sport, and had a strong association with the University of Tasmania football club, among others.

Current Executive Dean of Business and Economics, Professor Stuart Crispin, said Dr Felmingham was an outstanding scholar and educator, who for 35 years inspired students to study economics.

“He played a critical role as a public academic in the State, providing expert commentary and analysis on a range of economic issues impacting our community,” Professor Crispin said.

“He was passionate about the University and was a larger-than-life presence on and off campus."
