Safe and Fair Community Unit
SAFCU is a university-wide service to keep everyone in our community safe and well. We are here to listen, provide information and advice regarding your options and support, and where appropriate, facilitate actions to assist you with your situation. We respond to notifications of sexual assault or sexual harassment, concerns raised about wellbeing or behaviour, reports of misconduct, and the lodgement of general concerns or complaints.
Inclusion, diversity and equity
A number of programs and initiatives are available to our students to encourage and support equal opportunity and engagement in higher education for students in diverse and underrepresented groups.
Fostering an
inclusive culture
The University of Tasmania is committed to fostering an inclusive culture that promotes equality, values diversity and maintains a working, learning and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all its staff and students are respected.
Improving participation
and success
The University takes proactive steps to improve the participation and success of students from diverse and underrepresented groups such as students who identify as women (including women in non-traditional areas), students with disabilities, students with a low socio-economic background, students with an Indigenous background, or first in family to go to the university.
Using a
data-first approach
Information on commencement and completion rates is reported annually to the Australian Department of Education, who publishes ‘Selected Higher Education Statistics’ by university, including equity groups statistics. The University uses a data-first approach to identify areas of improvement to inform future strategic directions to ensure that regardless of their background, students can be successful.

Religious support
We welcome people of all faiths and spiritualities. Speerment Program for students on the autism spectrum
The Specialist Peer Mentor Program (Speerment) provides mentoring to students on the autism spectrum to support and provide assistance with managing their studies. If you participate in this program, you are matched with a mentor who meets with you once a week to help you settle into your course and navigate the university environment. As students themselves, mentors can help you identify what you need to do to be successful at university and help you achieve your goals. Learn more about Speerment (Student Portal).
Support for women and caregivers
The University has several initiatives and programs to support students who identify as women and caregivers, including scholarships specifically for women in non-traditional areas; mentorship opportunities, such as Women in Technology and Pathways to Politics for Women; parenting facilities, including breastfeeding rooms; aKIDemic Life, which offers support for PhD students balancing their degrees with parenting; and information and support to reduce occurrences of gender based violence at our University (Preventing gender based violence).
