Ian Elgey, a former project management consultant, has found a new calling in nursing through the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Nursing program at the Rozelle campus in Sydney.
Ian, who previously managed teams on major software development projects, was drawn to the University of Tasmania for its dedicated nursing and paramedicine campus and the personalised attention offered by its relatively small intake.
“I knew that choosing the University of Tasmania would mean I would be treated as an individual, and not a number,” Ian said.
Ian chose to study full-time in an accelerated mode, appreciating the continuous delivery of online classes and the approachability of lecturers.
He was pleasantly surprised by the supportive community among fellow students, who formed study groups and shared resources.
“From day one, a few fellow students, of us who had never met before, started study groups and messaging each other offering support and helping each other on coursework.” he said.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the course for Ian has been anatomy and physiology. Despite its challenges, he finds learning about the body’s systems incredibly rewarding.
“I had not studied biology in school so it has not been easy, but learning how marvellous and amazing the body systems are has been great,” Ian said.
Looking ahead, Ian plans to use his nursing degree to support a life of travel and adventure, valuing the profession’s portability, flexibility, and variety.
Ian’s journey at the University of Tasmania exemplifies the University’s commitment to providing a supportive and enriching educational experience, helping students like him achieve their career ambitions and personal goals.
