Indigenous procurement
The University of Tasmania is committed to fostering social and Indigenous procurement as part of our broader strategic initiatives.
Through collaborative projects like the Northern Transformation Campus Redevelopment, the University actively seeks to engage local Indigenous and Tasmanian Aboriginal enterprises. This promotes economic participation and development.
This initiative included creating an organisational register to connect Indigenous businesses with opportunities in construction, supplies, and services. With a focus on Indigenous employment and procurement, the University aims to support Aboriginal communities and ensure more equitable access to business opportunities.
This approach aligns with the University’s dedication to sustainable and inclusive growth, benefiting the broader Tasmanian community. For more information on the University’s approach to Aboriginal Business.
Social procurement
The University of Tasmania is dedicated to advancing social procurement as part of our commitment to sustainable and ethical practices.
This approach supports purchasing from suppliers that contribute positively to society, including social enterprises and businesses owned by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
By integrating social procurement into our policies, the University aims to create economic opportunities for marginalised communities and support local businesses.
This initiative not only enhances the University’s social impact but also aligns with our broader goals of fostering inclusivity and sustainability within Tasmania.

The University of Tasmania is committed to embedding sustainable procurement as a key consideration in our purchasing.
To assist staff in their decision making and to inform suppliers of our criteria we have published a Sustainable Procurement Guide (PDF 220.9 KB).

Payment terms
The standard University payment terms are 30 days from the invoice date (paid on next nearest Friday). For payment to be actioned a purchase order must be approved. The supplier invoice must have the purchase order number quoted before it can be matched to the purchase order and paid.
The University is aware of some fraudulent emails being sent out on behalf of the University. This issue is part of a larger, global problem of fraud that affects many organisations and individuals.
Fraudulent activities can take many forms, including phishing emails, fake websites, and impersonation scams. These schemes are designed to deceive and exploit unsuspecting victims. It is crucial to remain vigilant and cautious when receiving unsolicited communications.
Please note: The University primarily uses purchasing@purchasenow.utas.edu.au, for sending purchase orders. Any purchase orders received from other email addresses should be considered potentially fraudulent and ignored. Please email finance.payables@utas.edu.au if you wish to check the validity of a purchase order issued by the University.
Purchase orders
Why does the University require all suppliers to receive purchase orders before commencing work?
- Scope of work, specifications, price, delivery options and payment terms for the goods/services are clear and will be agreed upon before work or delivery commences.
- Standardised process for the University's staff to buy goods and services from registered suppliers.
- Clarity around commitments, providing greater certainty to suppliers.
- Simplifying and standardising purchasing, invoicing and payment practices improves the buying experience for both the University of Tasmania and its suppliers.
- Using Unimarket eMarketplace as the primary point for raising purchase orders and seeking quotes.
