Through the generosity of our benefactors, the University now manages a large portfolio of philanthropic funds, which continue to provide income that enables us to deliver on our mission to make a difference for Tasmania and from Tasmania to the world, in tangible ways. This includes the funding of scholarships and prizes to support our students and ensure the widest possible access to quality higher education, alongside high-impact research projects and the infrastructure that underpins this.
Establishing an endowed gift
At the University of Tasmania, your gift is invested as part of the University’s investment portfolio. The investment portfolio is integral to the University’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial sustainability and is governed by the University’s Treasury and Investment Policy. In doing so, we seek to maintain the real value of your gift into perpetuity and realise the donor’s expressed wish as central to our decision-making through achieving the following objectives:
- The real value of the capital is preserved in perpetuity, targeting an investment return (after fees) of headline CPI + 5% over the long term.
- A ‘spend rate’ or distribution of 3.5% of the capital is achieved.
This means if you are considering making an endowed gift you should consider an investment of roughly 30 times the annual amount required to fund the initiative you wish to support.
For example:
- A gift of $150,000 will realise an endowed scholarship of $5,000 per annum
- A gift of $30,000 will realise an endowed prize of $1,000 per annum
Investment fund report
The University produces an annual report which provides an overview of how philanthropic funds at the University are managed and a summary of their performance. Correspondence relating to individual funds is provided separately to donors or their nominated representatives.
