About the program

The University of Tasmania School of Physical Sciences runs a museum at its Mt. Pleasant Radio Telescope Observatory just off Richmond Road, Cambridge. The radio observatory has been operating for more than 20 years, with its distinctive 26m diameter radio "dish". Sharing this beautiful spot overlooking the Coal River Valley is a museum that showcases the life and work of Tasmanian radio astronomer, Grote Reber. The museum also showcases the radio telescopes and radio astronomy work of the University of Tasmania.

The tour includes:

  • a guided tour of the observatory including a close-up look at the "big dish" and a visit to the control room
  • time with a guide to explore the Museum which celebrates the work of the first radio astronomer: Grote Reber
  • viewing of 2D or 3D 10-15 minute long movies about space in our virtual reality theatre

Optional activities:

  • trying out our whispering dishes
  • safe viewing of the Sun
