University of the Arctic (UArctic)

We are the first member institution in the Southern Hemisphere of this network that works together in education, research and knowledge-sharing in and about the Arctic.

UArctic is a cooperative, multidisciplinary network that fosters cooperation in education, research and outreach to enhance human capacity in the Arctic, promote viable communities and sustainable economies, and to forge global partnerships.

Network members

Over 200 universities, colleges, research institutes and other organisations. The majority are located in the Arctic.

Non-arctic members

There are around 50 non-Arctic members, who are committed to promoting research and education in the circumpolar North.

Southern hemisphere member

The University of Tasmania is a non-Arctic member and the first institution in the Southern Hemisphere to achieve this status.

The network meets formally every year at the UArctic Assembly, which is accompanied by an academic Congress in alternating years. Outside of these meetings, the consortium’s activities are conducted through its 60+ Thematic Networks across all disciplines and its Learning Abroad program.

  • The Thematic Networks are the primary means of cooperation between member institutions’ faculties and researchers, and of joint education and research activities. The networks also promote funding opportunities among member organisations.
  • UArctic membership also opens up opportunities in the Arctic region for students to study abroad through the University of Tasmania’s Learning Abroad program.

The affiliation will bolster the University's capacity to contribute research in polar studies, forge partnerships and address the pressing challenges facing high-latitude regions. Critical disciplines include marine science, environmental management, social sciences (including tourism and governance) and Indigenous studies.
