About the research project
Childhood dementia is caused by a range of rare monogenic diseases that cause neurodegeneration and premature death, yet which lack specific and effective therapies. Often, childhood dementia diseases are studied independently, from each other and from more common age-related neurodegenerative diseases. This presents a 'missed opportunity' in which rarer diseases are overlooked for preclinical development of new therapeutics, despite the growing body of evidence linking neurodegenerative mechanisms between diseases affecting both children and adults. In this project you will use this data to find, and validate new drug targets for dementia, regardless of age of onset, using human tissue and human stem cell-derived models.

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend of $33,511 per annum (2025 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.
