About the research project

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming the educational landscape, presenting both opportunities and challenges for universities.  Recognising the profound implications of this technological shift, it is essential to understand how educators integrate GenAI into their teaching and assessment practices, and how higher education institutions can adapt to ensure quality and integrity in learning and teaching.

This project aligns with guidance from the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), which emphasises the importance of fostering a responsible and informed approach to GenAI in Australian higher education.

We are seeking a highly motivated Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidate to examine educators' engagement with GenAI in assessment design and the implications of this for how they teach and assess. The research will involve working closely with academic staff at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to develop evidence-based recommendations for how the university can adapt its learning and teaching strategies for the era of GenAI, focusing on assessment design, academic development, and policy formulation.

We are looking for a candidate with:

A strong interest in educational innovation and technology.

Experience or background in education, educational design, or a related field.

Sophisticated understanding of qualitative and/or mixed-methods research methodologies.

Strong analytical and communication skills.

This project offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the future of higher education in Australia by ensuring institutions remain responsive and resilient in the face of technological advancements like GenAI. The findings will play a critical role in shaping institutional strategies, fostering academic creativity, and safeguarding the integrity of learning and teaching in this new era. The project is based at the University of Tasmania with Dr Nadia Ollington and Professor Louise Starkey supervising.
