About the research project
Population expansion and economic growth have led to an escalated demand for an improved living standard, which in turn has driven up the energy consumption to meet the thermal comfort criteria in the building sector. About 40% of total electricity is used in buildings worldwide, of which air conditioning systems account for 70%. Currently, conventional vapor compression (VC) heating/cooling technologies dominate the air-conditioning market in the building sector. However, due to the large energy consumption in VC systems and ozone depletion issues caused by the refrigerant of the air-conditioning systems, researchers have put a lot of effort into developing energy-efficient and environment-friendly heating/cooling technologies. This project aims to develop and study sustainable green air-conditioning (heating and cooling) systems to replace traditional VC refrigeration systems under different climate conditions.

Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend of $32,192 per annum (2024 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.

Selection Criteria
The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.

- Knowledge of Thermodynamics, heat transfer and air-conditioning
Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, air-conditioning, modelling (TRANSYS), optimization and energy concepts as well as life-cycle analysis
