About the research project
Inland sand dunes occur in Tasmania, contributing to distinctive landscapes in the Central Highlands World Heritage area. Understanding of inland dunes is limited to basic description, with some chronology associated with past climates. Inland dunes likely differ from aeolian systems that commonly occur on the coast, which are well studied. This inductive research investigates alpine dune geomorphology, sedimentology and morphology to assess the ways in which alpine dune formation conforms to or varies from coastal dune formation. The research will include landform surveying, sediment analysis and spatial changes over the last several decades. Research will investigate topographic and spatial trends, sediment texture, grainsize and mineralogy, to reveal vulnerability to external pertubations. Uniqueness will be analysed to contribute to conservation priorities. Results will contribute to global understanding of inland aeolian alpine dunes, with implications for climate change histories and resilience of these unique systems.
