About the research project
This project forms part of the ARC-funded Discovery Project, "Creative Antarctica: Australian Artists and Writers in the Far South." The candidate will join a large multi-institutional and international team focused on understanding the experiences of professional artists and writers in the Antarctic region and on maximising the outcomes and benefits of residencies offered by national programs, tour operators and other organisations. The PhD project will complement the national focus of the team by taking a more international approach, which may be comparative or concentrated on a specific scheme. Applications from a range of disciplinary perspectives (including practice-based) are welcome, as long as they engage with the histories, impacts, experiences or futures of Antarctic-based arts residences. The particular approach will be developed by the team and the candidate depending on the applicant's background and interests.
Example topics include:
- A comparative study of Antarctic-based residences with other schemes based in extreme or isolated environments, and/or scientific communities;
- An analysis of Antarctic arts residency experiences outside of national programs;
- The history of Antarctic arts residencies in a particular medium, such as writing, photography, or performing arts.
Other suggestions are very welcome, within the scope of the description provided above.

Funding
Applicants will be considered for a Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship or Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarship (TGRS) which, if successful, provides:
- a living allowance stipend of $33,511 per annum (2025 rate, indexed annually) for 3.5 years
- a relocation allowance of up to $2,000
- a tuition fees offset covering the cost of tuition fees for up to four years (domestic applicants only)
If successful, international applicants will receive a University of Tasmania Fees Offset for up to four years.

- The project is open to applicants from Creative Arts, Humanities or Social Science disciplines only
- Applicants must be able to undertake the project on-campus
Selection Criteria
The project is competitively assessed and awarded. Selection is based on academic merit and suitability to the project as determined by the College.
Additional essential selection criteria specific to this project:
- First-class Honours or equivalent in a relevant discipline
Additional desirable selection criteria specific to this project:
- Background in qualitative methods and/or archival research
- Knowledge of or experience in polar or other extreme environments
- Experience working or studying in the creative arts (including creative writing, performing arts or visual arts)
