About the research project
The philosophy program invites East-West Philosophy applications (from both domestic and international applicants).
Philosophy is a common rational human enterprise and indeed philosophy, whether East or West, interrogates the same world. The historical and current exchanges between different philosophical traditions emerging out of unique cultures can make substantial contributions to addressing philosophical problems. This research project aims to draw attention to the value of these intercultural philosophical engagements between Eastern and Western traditions, not merely as a comparative exercise, but to show how the different philosophical lenses and the different perspectives can illuminate what may have been previously overlooked or obscure. Creating a common place in which intercultural philosophical discourse can take place offers an opportunity for advancing the discipline of philosophy generally by addressing philosophical problems outside the usual frame of Western cultural dominance.
This project engages with some of the central debates shared by both Eastern and Western philosophy concerning truth, realism, epistemic justification, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of mind, phenomenology, ontology, and causation. It explores specific philosophical problems such as the nature of self, personal identity, the mind-body relation, autonomy, truth/reality, free-will, consciousness, ethics and normativity and the implications of these debates for subsequent Eastern and Western thought and for contemporary philosophy. The project offers the opportunity to explore new scholarly analyses of recently translated texts previously unavailable to Western scholars. In this way, it demonstrates the fecundity of collaborative cross-cultural investigations.
This project may have a part-time study option available. Some restrictions may apply. Please discuss your preference with the Supervisor and note your preferred study option when applying.
