About the research project
About the project: Are you interested in researching the idea of human extinction? Are you worried about the escalating threat that climate change poses to all humanity, or by how this threat is contrasted by older, apocalyptic narratives? Are you interested in why some groups of people, mostly Indigenous and minority language speakers, have been or are deemed to be 'extinct'?
Project Summary: This project examines the idea of extinction as it is or has been applied to humanity and/or to groups of people including tribes, 'races' and small languages. The project aims to investigate discourses about human extinction generated by a range of actors, including (but not limited to): linguists and anthropologists; Indigenous and small language communities; activists and politicians; writers and artists; scientists and other scholars; and by journalists and contributors to social media.
Disciplines: This project is open to a researcher from any humanities discipline. The successful applicant will make a critical contribution to their field which might include literature, modern history or philosophy, extinction studies, Indigenous studies, and the studies of gender, genocide, settler colonialism and imperialism.
Methodologies: This project's design is open to being developed by the researcher with their supervisors. It may include traditional humanities' methodologies including researching historical archives, literature, art or philosophical and religious texts. Methodological approaches could also include conducting oral interviews or written surveys; using comparative international case studies; or innovative analyses of digital materials. Indigenous studies projects will follow the Indigenous protocol of "nothing about us without us" and will require a successful application to UTAS' Ethics Committee.
