About the research project
Philosophical questions are among the most important questions we face, both collectively and as individuals. But have we made any progress investigating these questions? If so, how much? The topic of philosophical progress has received much recent attention, with some arguing for the extremely pessimistic view that philosophy makes no progress at all, or even that it cannot make progress, and others arguing for the extremely optimistic view that philosophy has yielded collective knowledge of the answers to all of its big questions.
My current work seeks to bring order to this nascent debate. I welcome complementary PhD projects exploring broadly metaphilosophical themes, such as what it would be to make progress in philosophy, the extent to which there has been progress, the connections between methodology and progress, and between philosophy and other disciplines, the epistemology of disagreement, and so on. Please feel free to get in touch with me to discuss potential research questions within this project. Indigenous scholars welcome. Applicants interested in undertaking an internship during the course of their PhD project will be encouraged and supported in seeking out, and making an arrangement with, a suitable organisation.
This project may have a part-time study option available. Some restrictions may apply. Please discuss your preference with the Supervisor and note your preferred study option when applying.
