About the research project

Anthropogenic climate change will allow greater human access to the Antarctic region and an increase in Antarctic activities such as science, shipping, tourism and bioprospecting. This increased use of the Antarctic region poses significant challenges for the Antarctic Treaty System. Domestic or national law also plays a crucial role in Antarctic governance. The parties to the Antarctic Treaty incorporate their obligations under the Antarctic Treaty System into their domestic legal systems in various ways and apply domestic law to regulate activities of their nationals in Antarctica. This ensures that all activities in Antarctica are carried out in accordance with the Protocol on Environmental Protection, including the preparation of environmental impact assessment in the planning and conduct human activities in the region. The aim of this PhD project is to evaluate and compare how key Antarctic states such as the United States, China, Australia and Argentina, implement the provisions of the Antarctic Treaty System through their domestic legal systems.
