Foundation units can help you meet a pre-requisite entry requirement for your degree, for example if you have been out of school for a few years or didn’t study a subject in year 11/12. You may have already been made a conditional offer indicating that you need to complete one or more foundation units available via this page.
The specific pre-requisites met by the foundation units are listed below, and can be summarised as:
Foundation Unit | Requirement met |
---|---|
KYA103 Introduction to Physics | Year 12 Physics |
KMA100 Introduction to Mathematics | Year 12 Mathematics Methods |
KMA002 Applied Mathematics Foundation | Year 12 General Mathematics |
KRA161 Introduction to Chemistry* | Year 12 Chemistry* |
* If using this unit to satisfy the Chemistry 1A and 1B pre-requisite you must also have completed General Mathematics or Mathematics Methods, or enrol in KMA002 or KMA100.
Flexible and convenient
Foundation units are offered multiple times per year, and most can be studied online. This means you can meet a pre-requisite and then step straight into your bachelor's degree without any lost time.
How to study a foundation unit
First, you'll need to submit an application for your chosen degree. You'll receive notification if you need to complete a foundation unit to meet the requirements of your chosen degree.
Foundation units are offered through the Associate Degree in Science (S2G). Once you have accepted this offer, you will be able to enrol in the require pre-requisite units from your conditional offer.
Schools Recommendation Program (SRP) conditional offers
SRP students will be contacted, following the release of Year 12 results if you have not successfully completed the Year 12 pre-requisite(s) for your course with information on the next steps to complete required foundation units.
If you know that you are not completing the pre-requisite unit within your Senior Secondary study, please add in the Associate Degree in Science (S2G) as a preference and we will offer you this in advance of offer release.
General conditional offers
If you have received a conditional offer because you lack a course entry pre-requisite you will also receive an offer for the Associate Degree in Science (S2G):
- STEP 1: accept the conditional course offer
- STEP 2: accept the offer for the Associate Degree in Science (S2G)
- STEP 3: Enrol in the required foundation unit(s) that are needed (e.g. KRA161) by logging into eStudent when enrolments open in October.
Please note – most foundation units start early in January so that you can be ready for a Semester 1 start in February.
What happens once I complete my foundation unit(s)?
Once you’ve successfully passed the foundation unit(s) you need to meet the entry requirements for a course, our admissions team will contact you and let you know that you can progress with enrolling (e.g. for Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science (P3L) – Marine Biology).
