About these courses

As part of the University of Tasmania's commitment to child safety and protection, the following short courses have been developed.

The first course entitled “Introduction to Children’s Rights and Safety” Course, provides a general overview of children's rights, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and looks at the difference between duty bearers and rights holders.

A second, more detailed and extended course is also available, entitled "Child Safety: Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention". This course consists of evidence-based information on: prioritising children and young people's safety; myths, misconceptions and behaviours of perpetrators; recognition and response; and steps towards child safety and prevention.

These courses have been led by the University of Tasmania’s Peter Underwood Centre. The Peter Underwood Centre was launched in 2015, as part of a partnership between the University of Tasmania and the Tasmanian Government in association with the Office of the Governor of Tasmania.

The Centre’s focus is on research, partnerships and initiatives that contribute to positive and sustained change in educational outcomes for children and young people. The Centre’s work spans three pillars of action, each drawn from interactions with international research, policymakers and practitioners.

The Centre’s pillars include:

  • Research to inform policy and practice in order to improve learning outcomes for children and young people;
  • Facilitate and evaluate collaborative programs, initiatives and activities that support and address engagement and success in learning;
  • Foster and contribute to best practice research, policy and programs which make a difference to young people.

Along with research, our Peter Underwood Centre is focused on creating, delivering and supporting programs and initiatives that contribute to positive and sustained change in educational outcomes for children and young people.

* These courses do not provide legal advice and are for educational and training purposes only.
