About this course
Drones have become the most accessible way of capturing detailed aerial images – did you know drone technology can also help us to see the invisible?
From monitoring the health of crops and pastures, to monitoring landslides and coastal erosion, UAS remote sensing has become a powerful tool in our approach to environmental monitoring. The University of Tasmania Terraluma Research team is providing a unique opportunity for participants to learn how to turn their drone into a powerful remote sensing tool. You will advance your skills by learning specialised knowledge such as; choosing the most appropriate sensor, conducting high-precision aerial surveys, and converting your data into accurate, ultra-high resolution maps.
This course contains approximately 10 hours of content that you can view at your own pace during the next 12 months. If you do require a RePL, we recommend Remote Aviation as a training provider who can offer a discount to course attendees.
Who should do this course?
This course is designed for anyone who wishes to learn about remote sensing with drones. This course is particularly useful for practitioners, researchers, and anyone who would like to learn more about drone mapping.
Course Structure
This course is fully online and self-paced, allowing you to study when it’s convenient for you. As a general guide, we recommend allocating 10 hours of study time to complete this course. Learning content includes interactive activities, short videos, and reading resources to help guide your knowledge.
There are no formal assignments required for this course and all participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance. Your access to the learning material will also remain open for 12 months after registration.

Learn how to setup your camera or sensor, and how to use ground control to produce accurate drone maps.
Gain an understanding of image processing techniques and the software available for drone mapping.
Meet your instructors
Dr Darren Turner
Darren has a PhD in drone remote sensing. He specialises in the development of image processing routines to deal with the ultra-high resolution imagery collected with drones. Darren also has 25 years’ experience with aeromodelling, holds instructor ratings for model aircraft, has a private pilot’s license and of course a Remote Pilot License.
Professor Arko Lucieer
Arko is a Professor in Remote Sensing at University of Tasmania. He leads the TerraLuma research group, focusing on the development and application of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), sensor integration, and image processing techniques for environmental, agricultural, and high-precision aerial mapping applications. Arko teaches remote sensing and GIS at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Terraluma Project
The Terraluma research project at the University of Tasmania (formed in 2009) to develop tools for environmental remote sensing applications and aerial surveys using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The Project contributed to a range of applications utilised in the agriculture and viticulture sectors, as well as being deployed in urban, rural and remote environments. Visit terraluma.net to find out more about the project.
