About this course
Are you a brewer that has never studied brewing science before? Our Science of Brewing Operations short course is the ideal way to improve your craft and take your skills to the next level.
Building on a successful pilot program in 2023, we've again partnered with FermenTasmania and the Chartered Institute of Brewing and Distilling (CIBD) to pilot this tailored short course, designed for individuals to further develop their skills, knowledge, and connections in the Tasmanian brewing sector.
This offering includes access to our 60-hour short course, as well as full access to IBD’s 80-hour General Certificate of Brewing Course, with the opportunity to attain certification upon completion of the IBD exam (inclusive of price).
This is your opportunity to unpack the brewing process and underlying brewery operations, and upskill in industry relevant topics, including: health and safety, hygiene, engineering, and environmental management. This course will also provide you with an engaging introduction to the science behind craft brewing, to help ensure you achieve quality and consistency in your product.

Course details
- Access to three self-paced, fully online science-based modules (30 hours in total) - commences from 7 April 2025
- An introductory virtual workshop - May 2025 (date to be advised)
- The CIBD online content (approximately 80 hours) will be made available from May 2025
- Virtual workshops of two hour duration to be held in June, July, August and October (dates to be advised)
- A two-day face-to-face industry workshop in Hobart (September 2025)
- CIBD Set for Success exam preparation (September 2025)
- CIBD Exam: 21 October 2025
What you will learn
In addition to the IBD General Certificate of Brewing content (and certification), you will be able to:
- Explain the beer making and associated processes within commercial breweries and the underpinning science
- Describe operational decision making in terms of production quality, reliability, safety and environmental management throughout the brewing line
- Apply key brewing concepts and techniques in a simulated work environment
- Reflect on brewing practices and processes and their impact on your personal and professional development
