Delivered by the University of Tasmania, a recognised global leader in climate action, this course provides a comprehensive understanding of the multiple facets of climate change and its widespread impacts.
Our climate scientists, ecologists, social scientists, and many more will help you see the big picture of climate change and what you can do about it. This course goes beyond theory, equipping you with practical knowledge to make climate-smart decisions and drive change in your home and communities.
Upon completion, you will receive a digital badge to include in your CV or post on social media in recognition of your new skills and knowledge.
The Climate Shift: Exploring Science, Empowering Action is a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and is free of cost for all participants.
Course structure
Learn about the fundamental science behind climate change and why it matters.
This module lays the groundwork for understanding climate change. Exploring how it affects our world, the challenges of discussing it, the science behind it, and the urgency of needed responses. We'll take you on a virtual trip to the polar regions and learn from a mix of experts, including social scientists, climate scientists, and philosophers.
Explore how human activities contribute significantly to climate change and find out about the scientific evidence underpinning this.
This module examines how human activities, such as industrialisation and deforestation, have driven climate change, marking the Anthropocene era. We'll look at the emotions, behaviours, and systemic factors shaping our responses to climate change, including the roles of misinformation and media influence.
Discover how climate change affects our polar regions, oceans, weather patterns, and global communities.
This module explores the far-reaching impacts of climate change on our planet, its inhabitants and its systems. Through podcasts and videos, we emphasise that we are inseparable from nature, and that changes in remote ecosystems affect our urban lives.
Mitigation efforts focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly CO2 and methane. Achieving net-zero will require changes in policy, economic systems and our relationship with nature. We'll explore actions in wild areas, food systems, cities, consumption habits, and what industry and government can do. Collective effort across all these areas is essential to combat this global crisis.
Examine how different species and ecosystems can adapt to ongoing climate challenges.
As our planet faces escalating climate impacts, society needs effective adaptation strategies to avoid negative effects on nature and society. Many species can't adapt quickly enough to the rapidly changing ecosystems.
While adaptation strategies are helpful, resources are limited, and managing adaptations for even 50% of species is challenging. These interventions come with unknown risks and require thorough testing. This module covers adaptation strategies at different scales and introduces "radical hope" as a personal strategy.
Gain insights into practical tools and decision-making strategies for taking action on climate change at individual, community, and global levels.
This module explores a range of tools, from high-level policy directives, frameworks, ecosystem services, geoengineering, and citizen science initiatives to being an advocate for climate change.
We also provide insights into the tools needed to make climate-positive changes in organisations and businesses. Finally, we will leave you with a list of actions we can all take right now in our homes, schools, workplaces and communities.
What you will learn
The course includes texts for you to read, podcasts for you to listen to, videos for you to watch. We encourage you to listen to the podcast elements while walking in nature and to apply what you learn in your own community.
Upon completing the course, you’ll receive a digital badge. Optional quizzes test your understanding and scoring 80% or higher on all quizzes makes you eligible for a paid digital certificate.
The course ends with a survey to help us continually improve The Climate Shift course for future participants.
