The Tyler Collection includes an internationally-significant body of artworks spanning Romania’s rich artistic traditions; from the Byzantine, through to the modernism of the Communist era. Of the twenty-six Romanian artists represented, only four are women: Geta Brătescu (1926–2018) Sultana Maitec (1928–2016) , Georgeta Năpăruș (1930–1997) , and Silvia Radu (b. 1935) .

4 Women  4 Pathways celebrates their unique creativity, from the oppression of Ceacescu’s authoritarian regime, to the freedom of the post-1989 Revolution era.

Each artist draws on Romania's rich cultural heritage for their symbolism, content, and style; reflecting influences from ancient Egypt and Greek antiquity, classical Roman and Ottoman worlds. Together, they interpose a microcosm of Western cultural origins with Romanian domestic traditions of weaving and embroidery.

These influences are brought together in this exhibition to express the endurance of creative individuality and diverse heritage during an era of social and political upheaval.
