The Bachelor of Arts spans 23 majors owned by three different Colleges. It is a capacious and multi-faceted course offering which emphasises the role of the human and the social in shaping our world. As such, the Bachelor of Arts is uniquely positioned to enable students to respond to our society through the advanced knowledge and core skills of communication, ethical and critical thinking, and creative solutions.

The Bachelor of Arts Advisory Committee supports engagement, communication, and influence between the University and external partners. It offers expert advice on the currency and relevance of the course, and its alignment with future directions in research, industry, and the government and non-profit sectors. It enables consultation with representatives from external organisations, ensuring that course design, curriculum, engagement and enrichment opportunities in the Bachelor of Arts meet the evolving needs of students, employers, professions and other stakeholder groups.

Adrienne Picone

I am the CEO of the Tasmanian Council of Social Service (TasCOSS). Our mission is to challenge and change the systems, attitudes and behaviours that create poverty, inequality and exclusion. I have a Bachelor of Arts from the Flinders University of South Australia, and a Diploma of Education from the University of Tasmania.

I am pleased to be on the Bachelor of Arts Course Advisory Committee and hope to bring a community voice to the table, and ensure that all Tasmanians regardless of background have the same opportunities to access a quality education.

Duncan Young

My name is Duncan Young and I am a General Manager at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), with responsibility for the Census, Enterprise Strategy and Communications. I am also the Head of Office of the ABS Hobart Office.

I have a Masters of Public Administration from the Australia / New Zealand School of Government, and a Bachelor of Science from University of Tasmania.

As an alumni of the University of Tasmania and a proud member of the Tasmanian community I am pleased to have an opportunity through the CAC to contribute back to our local community. I will bring a variety of perspectives to the CAC including an understanding of Australia’s changing demography and work force, as well as of potential employment pathways in the Australian Public Service.

Ruth Groom

Ruth is Executive General Manager People, Culture & Engagement at Hydro Tasmania, Australia’s leading clean energy business and largest generator of renewable energy. In this role Ruth has responsibility for communications, stakeholder and government relations, workplace health & safety, people, culture and change, diversity, equity & inclusion and internal audit.

Ruth has a Bachelor of Arts and a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Studies (Hons) from the University of Tasmania and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Ruth has also completed a Certificate IV in Competitive Systems and Practices.

Having studied a Bachelor of Arts, I recognise the value of the breadth and depth of the program and the significant benefits the skills developed can bring in the workforce. I am looking forward to bringing an industry perspective to the Course Advisory Committee.
