School of Architecture and Design

We aim to help shape the world we live in. By supporting students and graduates to envision and create better buildings, products, sites and experiences, we can help tackle global challenges in diverse contexts.

Studying Architecture and Design - our island classroom.

Like our island state of Tasmania, the School of Architecture and Design is uniquely placed to excite and inspire students with remarkable experiences.

With us, you’ll get the chance to discover and develop creative, sustainable, ethical, and viable approaches to challenging three-dimensional problems. You’ll be encouraged to actively experiment.

Our School is full of diverse and innovative thinkers. We concentrate on place-based design questions. And we foster professional, industry, and community relationships.

In our research, and learning and teaching activities, we work to create thriving and resilient professions, businesses, and communities.

Study with us

Our students come from everywhere and can develop their careers anywhere. Culture, history, and global concerns are as much a part of what we are and what we do as the local challenges that face our communities in Tasmania.

Our facilities

Our home is an award-winning refurbished railway workshop on the Inveresk campus in the heart of Launceston.

Architecture and Design at the University of Tasmania has outstanding purpose-built studio and workshop facilities with cutting-edge technology for learning, researching and creating.

Undergraduate courses

Postgraduate courses and research degrees

Students created a mobile performance stage and recording booth for the iconic Tasmanian MONA FOMA festival.

Learning by making

We have a focus on learning by making and creative experimentation.

Students and researchers have access to purpose-built studio and workshop spaces with high quality technology and equipment so you can learn by making and doing.

Students can also do elective courses centred on collaborative design and build projects for communities and organisations emphasising environmental and social benefit.

Jackson Wells, Honours student

As his honours project, Jackson used virtual reality as a design tool in creating a real-world health solution.

Showcasing our students

The work of our final-year architecture students is featured in a printed annual catalogue. It showcases the creativity and capabilities of these soon-to-be graduates.

Alan, Master of Architecture student

Alan is originally from Vietnam and is studying the Master of Architecture. He chose Architecture and Design because of the design philosophies and the facilities in Launceston.

Enjoy the Tasmanian lifestyle and identity

Escape the crowds and experience a more relaxed, Launceston lifestyle without compromising on the quality of your education. Our classes are smaller in size than many other universities which allows you to develop closer relationships with your teachers.

You'll shape the future while respecting the past as we work together with the local community to meet real world design challenges.

Work integrated learning

Our Work Integrated Learning program also helps students to have formative work-life experiences, pursue personal interests and make meaningful connections with today’s industry leaders.

Our expertise focuses on ecological sustainability with a socially and culturally informed regional perspective. Within this context, our researchers explore architecture, urban design, building performance, product design and material development, and technologically advanced processes of making.
