Growing up on the coast of Queensland, Gabrielle Hall has had a deep love of the ocean and all things water-related since childhood.

So, as soon as she discovered the existence of the Australian Maritime College, she knew exactly where she wanted to go for her university studies.

“I recognised it as the natural choice for my academic endeavours,” she said.

Relocating to Tasmania in 2021, she started studying a Bachelor of Global Logistics and Maritime Management in Launceston and immediately found it to be profoundly enriching.

“I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this course, as it offered an even balance between business, maritime shipping and logistics,” she said.

“Blending business and ships is something you never really think of as a concept, or career for that matter, however it is the most interesting and mind-blowing thing.”

The course covers a range of topics, including vessel operations, maritime law, maritime economics, and ship chartering, as well as exploring logistics for shipping and other modes of transportation, including trucking, rail and airfreight.

“I found this very beneficial when the time came to look for a job because this degree opened so many different doors to various pathways,” Gabrielle said.

After graduating in December 2023, Gabrielle started work with shipping company Swire Bulk as an operations trainee.

“As an operator I manage vessel operations, aiming to optimise overall efficiency. Some of the operations I mange include vessel speed, routing, bunkers (fuel), cargo hold cleaning, hull cleaning, and cargo management, to name a few.”

Gabrielle engages with ship captains and stakeholders worldwide on a daily basis and loves the dynamic nature of her responsibilities, with no two days the same.

“Each day presents new challenges and opportunities for growth,” she said.

“There are so many amazing opportunities and careers within this industry, all over the world, and it all starts at the Australian Maritime College.”
