Molly Payne’s academic pursuits at the University of Tasmania are deeply rooted in her passion for sustainability, community development and, most importantly, her desire to make a difference for future generations. And, as a mother, her commitment to these causes is also deeply personal,

"I’ve always been passionate about sustainability and community, so studying at the University of Tasmania allowed me to dive deeper into these areas,” she said.

“I want to help create a world where my kids and future generations can thrive.”

Molly initially completed a double degree in economics and science, majoring in geography and minoring in plant science. Throughout her studies, she was particularly drawn to the intersection of economics, sustainability, and advocacy.

"It became clear to me early on that understanding both economics and sustainability was essential for creating lasting change. They really go hand-in-hand."

Her undergraduate experience at the University of Tasmania equipped her with a solid understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of geography and economics.

"The geographical side of my studies, which was more humanities-oriented, gave me a great foundation in sustainability," she said.

"On the economics side, I was able to learn how to understand and address complex problems and, most importantly, how to advocate for change."

Building on this foundation, Molly pursued a Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Business, which allowed her to deepen her knowledge of sustainable business practices. This academic experience provided her with the tools to make a tangible impact in the field of sustainability, particularly in Tasmania, where she continues to advocate for more sustainable practices.

"I wanted to know how businesses could improve their sustainability strategies," she said.

"The course really opened my eyes to things like sustainability reporting, and it gave me the tools to help small businesses and community organisations start thinking about sustainability, too."

Now working towards her honours and planning for a PhD, Molly’s academic focus remains on sustainability, with a particular interest in consulting for organisations that have yet to fully engage with sustainable business practices.

"I’m especially passionate about helping organisations that haven’t yet integrated sustainability into their business practices," she said.

“There’s a huge opportunity to make real change by helping these organisations adopt sustainable practices.”

Her studies have not only broadened her understanding of sustainability but also equipped her with the skills to create meaningful change in both policy and practice.

"The combination of my economics and sustainability background gives me the unique ability to approach problems from multiple angles, and I’m excited to keep working towards making a real difference."
