Around 60 leaders of Australia’s maritime industry will be on show at the University of Tasmania’s Newnham campus this week as part of the Australian Maritime College’s (AMC) biggest ever Careers Expo.

The annual event, which will be held on Wednesday 19 March, brings together the country’s most innovative maritime companies and the next generation of maritime engineers, seafarers and logistics professionals.

High school students and AMC students will have the chance to explore industry placement opportunities, discover graduate career paths, and gain insight into the skills and experiences that employers value most, preparing them to launch their careers in the dynamic maritime sector in Australia, and beyond.

AMC Principal Mal Wise AM said AMC was proud to offer this unique opportunity for students to meet face-to-face with industry leaders.

"The maritime sector contributed more than $3.5 billion to the Australian economy in 2022-2023, and directly employed 28,000 people,” Mr Wise said.

“This is a very large and influential industry and one that offers endless opportunities for our graduates.

“This event is the only one of its kind in Australia for the maritime sector, and not only provides invaluable career insights but also strengthens the bridge between academia and industry, ensuring our students are well-prepared to make an immediate impact when they enter the workforce,” he said.

Global maritime engineering and manufacturing company Birdon, based in Port Macquarie in NSW, has partnered with AMC over many years to secure a pipeline of talented graduates into their workforce through the ‘Birdon Futures’ program.

Birdon Manager of People and Culture Martin Minogue said partnering with AMC and attending the AMC Careers Expo was a vital part of stewarding outstanding students towards rewarding careers in their organisation.

“This direct connection with the university and AMC helps us to find candidates who are passionate, well-trained, and eager to excel in the industry.”

Recent AMC graduate and Birdon Futures Graduate Naval Architect Owen Spanswick was first introduced to his current employer during the 2023 Careers Expo.

“Meeting the Birdon team completely changed my career trajectory,” he said.

“The event truly opened doors for me, and I’m thrilled to be working on national projects and building my career with such a respected company.”
