Our applied Economics course focuses on current issues in Tasmania and beyond

Your studies will explore a range of topics such as international trade, conservation and management of natural resources, sustainable energy, contemporary business strategy as well as social issues such as crime, housing, and health. You’ll also develop a deep understanding of how decisions are made by individuals, firms, and governments.

In addition, you will select one of two majors to specialise your studies: Industry, Policy and Business Strategy, or Society and Environment. The remainder of the course consists of elective units where you can choose to study more economics subjects, or expand your knowledge across any discipline of the University. You can even pick up a second major to provide complementary skills.

Study options in this degree

A major is an area of focus in your degree. During your studies, you’ll choose an area that interests you, and then study a group of units related to that area. Find out more at What is a Major?

In addition to our economics majors below, you may also wish to look at our Business study options.

Understand contemporary economics and develop the analytical and problem-solving skills required to be successful. You’ll be able to work in growth industries like energy, agriculture, and business strategy. We’ll also equip you with the skills desired by businesses and government, as well as a range of consulting firms and non-government organisations.

In this major, you'll study international economics, which helps you understand both micro and macroeconomic ideas worldwide, focusing on trade, investment, and money matters. You'll learn to analyse how global trade and monetary policies affect local and global economies, understanding why development is uneven and why efficiency and fairness don't always go hand in hand. In behavioural economics, which blends psychology with economics, you'll go beyond traditional economic thinking, using experiments to understand how individuals and groups make decisions. This hands-on approach lets you design and carry out economic experiments, which you can then use to evaluate business strategies and public policies

Interested in finding economic solutions to make a positive impact on society and the environment? This major teaches you about contemporary economics with an applied focus on social and public policy. You'll learn about the issues facing the world today, including environmental management and resource economics, the economics of social issues including crime and education, regional development, and other issues in public policy.

In this major, you'll explore modern social problems like wealth inequality, poverty, gender gaps, crime, gambling, and housing. We'll examine these issues by considering how markets and government actions affect them, aiming for fairness and effectiveness. You'll learn how economic methods help us understand these issues and shape government decisions. Plus, you'll discover the importance of nature's benefits, known as ecosystem services, and how they're crucial for sustainable resource management. Through real-life case studies from around the world, Australia, and Tasmania, you'll delve into challenges like keeping fisheries sustainable, managing forests, and dealing with mining's effects.

Add sustainability to your degree

As part of our commitment to sustainability, we have created a complementary, optional major available across most of our flexible bachelor's degrees.

In the major, explore interdisciplinary knowledge and skills that underpin the development of sustainable societies and solutions. Informed by international and local research, practice, and theory, this major allows you to develop specialist expertise across the physical and social sciences and humanities, emphasising student-led and problem-based learning.

It provides the frameworks for developing sustainability-oriented solutions in a range of fields and is relevant to a wide range of careers.

Combined study options

Choosing a double degree allows you to deepen your knowledge within two separate study areas. This means you can pursue your career and follow your passion at the same time. And when you graduate, you’ll have a set of skills that will really set you apart.

The Bachelor of Economics can be combined with a number of other degrees. Visit the Double Degrees page to learn more.
