The University of Tasmania recognises the importance of undertaking culturally appropriate research with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

All research regarding Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people, culture and heritage must go through the University of Tasmania Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). The HREC committee must consist of at least one Aboriginal person.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ethics Advisors

The University has an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ethics Advisor, who is available to provide support and guidance regarding draft ethics application in accordance with National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines Ethical conduct in research with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and communities: Guidelines for researchers and stakeholders (2018), Keeping research on track II (2018) and the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2007) Updated 2018.

The Advisor can offer advice on a draft application and assist you to understand what is required before your application submitted to the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC). Advisors may also be asked by the HREC to provide advice to the HREC on ethical issues in relation to research conducted with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people or their data.
