Research strengths and expertise
Our civil engineering research strengths include working with fibre reinforced polymer materials (FRP) in metallic structures, engineered wood products and high-strength steel.
We are experts in boundary element methods: applications with moving boundaries, finite element analysis and dynamic applications.
Strengthening aging metallic structures using FRP composites is one of our research focuses, investigating extending the life of structures, strengthening techniques and debonding mechanisms of FRP and steel composite structures.
High-strength steel and its associated issues of strength loss and failure under fatigue loads are of interest to our team, as is research on engineered wood products, such as nail laminated timber panels.
Our team also has expertise spanning musical aspects of engineering, including room and auditorium acoustics, violin making, structural vibrations and dynamic response, wave and free surface flows, high-speed ship interactions with waves and related fluid-structure interactions.
