Electrical engineering

Research strengths and expertise

Electrical engineering research at the University of Tasmania is diverse, covering electronics, communication and computer system engineering and electrical power and control systems engineering.

This work spans satellite remote sensing research, with on-the-ground projects that enable real-time detection of bush fires, deforestation due to informal settlement expansion in the developing world as well as illegal logging, bush encroachment due to invasive foreign plant species, and land degradation due to farming and other human activity.

Our power and control systems research focuses on the greatest challenges facing the electric power industry. We are helping to solve technical problems associated with the integration of distributed and renewable generation into existing power networks.

Research areas include: renewable and smart energy systems, hybrid remote area power supply systems, network operation and security control, load modelling, and intelligent systems application to power systems, microgrids, smart grids, and electric and hybrid vehicles.
