    Student Exchange Program

    You can apply to be an exchange student if you’re enrolled
    at one of the University of Tasmania’s international
    exchange partners and you’re nominated by your home
    university.

    If your home university doesn’t have an exchange
    agreement, you can apply to be a study-abroad
    student. This also applies if your university is one of our
    student exchange partners, but you have not secured

Where is the campus located?

The University of Tasmania has two main campuses, Launceston (in the north) and Hobart (in the South). Tasmania is an island of the south eastern tip of Australia and is a safe and friendly place with a population of ~500,000. Hobart is the state’s capital city and is consistently rated in the top 10 cities to visit in Australia.

What is the weather like in Tasmania?

Tasmania experiences all four seasons: fall, winter, spring, and summer. There are more than 200 days of clear sunshine per year and students do not need a car to get to campus. You can catch a bus, walk or ride a bicycle through town and around campus. Our average summer temperature is 20 degrees Celsius and our average winter temperature is 5 degrees Celsius.

How safe is the campus?

The campus and city are very safe. Many people walk and bike around campus and the city. Hobart is rated among the best cities to live in Australia. To learn more about safety on campus.

Incoming study abroad and exchange students may be eligible to apply for financial awards to support students in their studies while in Tasmania.

What are the study abroad & exchange deadlines?

Semester 1 (beginning February): You will need to apply before 1 October

Semester 2 (beginning July): You will need to apply before 28 February

The University of Tasmania accepts students all year round. Applying before the deadlines listed above will give you time to secure your visa, flights, and accommodation.

Completed applications generally receive an outcome within 2 weeks of applying.

Due to recent changes, student visas may take up to 16 weeks to be processed. It is therefore imperative that students apply for their program and visa as early as possible.

What documents must I submit with my application?

  • A scanned copy of your academic transcript
  • A scanned copy of your passport photo page
  • English language proficiency test (if applicable)

Can I study at The University of Tasmania if I am not proficient in English?

Yes, however students will need to undertake our English Access Program if you do NOT meet the English language requirement for the program you are seeking entry. Students can undertake studies through our English Language Centre until you meet the English language requirement for your degree program.

How much does it cost to study at the University of Tasmania?

What is the tuition fee for me?

If you are an exchange student, you continue paying tuition fees to your home university.

When do I pay my tuition and what are the rules for refunds?

You will be prompted to pay your tuition fees once you have accepted your official offer letter from the University of Tasmania. Please review your offer letter for to enrolment, payment deadlines, and refund policies.

Do all of my documents need to be translated into English?

Yes. All documents must be professionally translated.

Can I take ESL classes at the University of Tasmania?

Yes, we offer both full-time and part-time ESL Programs.

Are you on a semester or trimester system?

The University of Tasmania is on a semester system.

  • Semester 1 is from February to June;
  • Semester 2 is from July to November.

Do I have to choose a major when I apply?

No. You do not need to choose a major, inbound students are welcome to study a range of units from multiple disciplines.

When can I enrol in classes?

The Learning Abroad Office will enrol you in your classes before you arrive on campus.

What is the average class size at the University of Tasmania?

The average tutorial (classroom setting) has a quota of 21 students.

How many students attend the University of Tasmania?

Approximately 50,000 students and 5,400 international students study with University of Tasmania.

Can I live on campus?

Yes. The campus offers a variety of places to live and eat. Students must complete a housing application and pay the required application fee to live on-campus.

Do you have student clubs and organisations?

Yes, we have more than 100 student clubs and societies!  There are cultural, sports, and academic based clubs.

Please note that the University of Tasmania is not able to help with your visa application and has no influence on the application process.

How do I get a visa? What do I need to know about the immigration process?

Can you write a letter to speed up my visa application?

We encourage you to apply for your visa immediately after you receive your confirmation of enrolment (CoE). Securing your visa can 4 months or longer.

Do I have to attend the Student Orientation?

Yes, the International Student Orientation is mandatory. During orientation you will meet the Learning Abroad Team & International Student Advisers who will confirm your enrolment and help you get settled in Tasmania.

You will also learn about working on campus, academic skills, receiving your student ID card, UTAS laboratories and research facilities, immigration requirements, and international student services.

Dual Citizens

In the past we have received students who are dual citizens, that is; holding a citizenship from the country they are applying from as well as an Australian citizenship/passport holder.

When students apply through Studylink, it should be with the nationality of the country from which they are applying from (not Australian).

  • Students should apply with their foreign nationality in Studylink
  • However, students may use their Australian Passport when entering Australia
  • If the student enters Australia using their non-Australian passport, they must have applied and be approved for the necessary student visa before entering Australia
  • Dual citizens/Australian passport holding students may choose to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover; or, they may choose to be covered as an Australian citizen (Medicare/Public/Private Health)
  • Students applying for either a Study Abroad or Student Exchange program will not be eligible for HEC-HELP

Information regarding Orientation will be emailed to you directly a few weeks in advance of your arrival.

Please ensure that you arrive with enough time to recover from jet lag, settle in to your accommodation and participate in the compulsory Orientation program.

Orientation week is a really good opportunity to meet new people and an excellent first introduction to living and studying in Tasmania.

On the first day of Orientation you will meet the Study Abroad & Exchange staff and they will provide you with useful information to help you during your program.

For the remainder of Orientation week you will receive guidance and relevant information about making the most of your time at the University of Tasmania, an introduction to the University computer based systems, the opportunity to become a member Clubs and Societies as well as a campus and library tour, an introduction to the Health Care System and the opportunity to meet other students.
