Register your interest

Our exchange program allows you to spend up to a year of your degree studying overseas. We have over 150+ exchange partners throughout Europe, North America and Asia. Tuition fees at the host university are waived, and all studies undertaken are recognised as part of your degree.

A range of scholarships are available to help cover some of your costs. Plus, our team of dedicated staff will be there to support you every step of the way.

Looking for a shorter experience? We also have a range of summer and winter programs that run from 2 to 4 weeks. This can involve overseas travel or an online experience. You could spend a snow season in France, attend a rock concert in the USA, or do a virtual Hong Kong internship. Not all classrooms have four walls.

University of Tasmania Outbound Exchange

What programs are available?

If being totally immersed in a new culture sounds appealing, why not try a semester-long exchange?

This program gives you the opportunity to study at 100+ partnered universities for up to a year as a part of your University of Tasmania degree. All approved programs will be credited towards your University of Tasmania degree.

  • Location: 140+ partner universities in North America, Asia and Europe
  • Duration: 1 – 2 semesters
  • Fees: Continue paying your University of Tasmania tuition fees. Students are responsible for funding flights, accommodation, cost of living etc.
  • Funding: University scholarships, host institution scholarships, OS-HELP Loan, Centrelink Student Allowance.

Overseas experiences range from a 2 – 6 week short-term program, to a 1 – 2 semester exchange.

The University of Tasmania has partnered with highly ranked and prestigious universities all over the world, including those from Asia, Europe and North America.

How will I fund my experience?

Exchange students continue to be enrolled at the University of Tasmania and incur tuition fees as normal. Exchange students will not be required to pay tuition to the host university. The individual cost of taking part in an overseas study program will vary depending upon the duration of the program, location and your lifestyle. We recommend that you budget between A$12,000 – A$15,000 per semester.

But don’t panic, as there are plenty of funding options available!

The Scholarships Office offers a range of financial awards to support students gaining an
international experience as part of their degree.

Amount: Varies from: $500 – $5,000

More information

The OS-HELP Loan is a federal government scheme. It is available to eligible domestic undergraduate and postgraduate students looking to study overseas as part of their degree. The funding can be used to support travel and study overseas for credit. The loan amount is then added to your HECS-HELP.

Amount: Up to $7,037 (non-Asian countries) Up to $8,444 (Asian countries).

If you currently receive financial assistance from Centrelink, you may be eligible to continue receiving this payment whilst studying overseas. For more information, please contact Centrelink directly.

All students travelling overseas on an approved program are covered by the University’s
corporate travel insurance for up to 365 days. You may still be required to take out additional health insurance in your own name.

Eligibility criteria

Please note:

  • Entry requirements for short-term programs may vary.
  • Some degrees are unable to undertake a student exchange.

Master's level students:

  • Must have successfully completed one semester of full-time study (50 credit points) before departing on exchange

To be eligible for an Exchange, students must meet the following requirements.

  • Have successfully completed at least one full year (100 credit points) at the University of Tasmania before departing on exchange
  • Must be enrolled in at least one 12.5% unit in the semester prior to exchange
  • Have and maintain a pass / credit average or above (GPA of 4.0)
  • Are aware you will be required to study full time whilst overseas
  • Be considered a good ambassador for the University
  • Have no outstanding debts to the University
  • Meet College specific criteria
  • Be 18 years or over

Steps for success

Step 1: Getting started

Attend an information session. Check the list of available exchange partners on our website. Talk to Learning Abroad Office staff about options that match your degree.

Step 2: Submit your Online Application

Submit the Outbound Application form with supporting documentation to the Learning Abroad Office.

Step 3: Pre-departure

If successful, you will be given access to an online unit that will provide you with further guidance on how to complete the next steps required.

Application dates

For an exchange in Semester 1: Applications open May 30, Applications close July 30

For an exchange in Semester 2: Applications open 30 October, Applications close 28 February
