In June of each year, the Australian Government releases the State and Territory Greenhouse Gas Inventories as part of the National Inventory Report.
Bearing in mind a two-year lag, these reports provide an important opportunity to assess our progress towards emissions reduction targets and highlight priorities for future action. Tasmania can credibly claim to be among the few jurisdictions on Earth where forests and soil currently remove more carbon than we emit into the atmosphere.
But we now no longer lead Australia on absolute emissions per capita, with South Australia now producing fewer per capita and Victoria looking to pass us soon.
The University of Tasmania is committed to providing annual independent reviews of Tasmania’s greenhouse gas emissions. We will continue to report on Tasmania’s greenhouse gas emissions and work with partners to provide analysis and recommendations on climate action.
