Sustainable development for communities

Tasmanian communities face a diverse range of complex challenges, from entrenched disadvantage to workforce shortages and deindustrialisation. Policymakers, business and community leaders, and researchers need to work together to address challenges through tailored, sustainable solutions. These ‘place-based’ approaches build on communities’ unique strengths to deliver lasting, holistic change.

In line with our commitment to a sustainable, equitable and inclusive Tasmania, we do research and projects aimed at understanding the strengths and challenges that characterise different regions and cohorts across the state. Our goal is to support place-based approaches to sustainable community and economic development.

Our work in this area includes:

  • Research into what attracts people to the West Coast and what drives them away
  • Analysis of housing needs and ‘drive-in drive-out’ employment on the West Coast
  • Analysis of population trends in Northern Tasmania
  • Research and evaluation support for the Regional Jobs Hubs model.
