Democratic engagement and good governance

At the heart of a sustainable, equitable, and inclusive society is a democratic system of governance that is responsible and responsive. Our system of government must uphold human rights, respect the rule of law, encourage democratic participation, hold free and fair elections, and feature accountable and transparent institutions.

The TPE recognises that democratic engagement and good governance do not happen on their own – they must be carefully nurtured and supported. This means critically examining our systems of governance and constantly trying to improve them. It means having public debates about our democracy and exciting new policy ideas.

Our work in this area includes:

  • Research and analysis support for the Tasmanian Government’s Future of Local Government Review
  • An ‘Island of Ideas’ event on shaking up Tasmanian democracy
  • Various submissions to parliamentary bills related to electoral donations and disclosures
