Becoming a primary or secondary school teacher

Transform your passion into a purposeful teaching career

Teaching is more than just a career – it’s a way to inspire, guide, and shape future generations. Before beginning your journey, it’s worth reflecting on the kind of difference you want to make. Do you want to nurture young learners during their foundational years or empower teenagers as they prepare for their futures?

In Australia, primary school teachers work with students from Prep to Year 6, helping them build confidence, curiosity, and essential skills during their formative years. Secondary school teachers engage students from Years 7 to 12, specialising in areas like English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, the Arts, and Languages – inspiring a love of learning and preparing them for life beyond school.

For those passionate about health and physical education, the Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) provides a versatile pathway to teach in both primary and secondary schools, helping students embrace active and healthy lifestyles.

If secondary teaching is your calling, you have several options. A bachelor’s degree in your chosen specialisation followed by a Master of Teaching is a flexible pathway, offering fast-tracked completion in just 18 months. Alternatively, you can enrol in one of our double degrees, seamlessly combining a bachelor’s qualification with a Master of Teaching – giving you the tools to turn your passion into a meaningful, impactful career.

No matter which path you choose, teaching allows you to channel your passion into a lifelong purpose, empowering the next generation while enjoying the rewards of a stable and in-demand career.

In this double degree you’ll complete an undergraduate bachelor’s degree and postgraduate master’s degree in a streamlined course of study, in a shorter time than studying the courses individually, and graduate with both qualifications.

This will accelerate your career allowing you to graduate in just 4-years. In the Bachelor of Arts, you’ll take on the world’s cultural, environmental and humanitarian challenges from multiple perspectives and gain the confidence to make a positive difference. Your studies will deepen your knowledge, which you will build on in your chosen teaching specialisation.

The Master of Teaching is accredited through the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board and is recognised in all Australian states and territories. You’ll be able to choose whether to teach at a primary or secondary school level. The specialisations you teach will depend on the Major you complete in the Bachelor of Arts.

How do I apply for this course?

In this double degree you’ll complete an undergraduate bachelor’s degree and postgraduate master’s degree in a streamlined course of study, in a shorter time than studying the courses individually, and graduate with both qualifications.

The reduced timeframe is made possible because elective space in the bachelor's degree is used to study units from the master's degree. These units count towards both degrees, reducing the total number of units you need to complete, while still providing all the knowledge, skills, and experience required to graduate with two qualifications.

Your studies commence with the undergraduate component to give you all the knowledge and confidence you need to progress, with the postgraduate component generally commencing in the third year and building on that foundation.

If you wish to undertake the double degree, you need to apply for the Bachelor of Arts, and select the Bachelor of Arts and Master of Teaching option.
