Once you have applied for University of Tasmania scholarships, remember to check out the external scholarships you may be eligible for.

External scholarships are offered by generous organisations outside the University. They can give you extra financial support to focus on your studies. Applications for these scholarships are made directly to individual organisations.

In some cases, you may receive both a University of Tasmania scholarship and an external scholarship. Click below to learn more about each opportunity.

Merit scholarships

A merit scholarship is assessed based on a student's academic achievement.

The Westpac Future Leaders scholarship is all about supporting everyday people with big ideas looking to pursue postgraduate research or coursework in areas related to sustainability, technology and innovation, social change or Australia’s relationship with Asia. Scholarship recipients will have access to generous funding, leadership development and overseas experiences.

The Rhodes scholarships is a fully funded, full-time, postgraduate award which enables talented young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. The Rhodes scholarships are open to students from all disciplines.

Successful candidates are chosen on the basis of outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service. The scholarships cover all University and College fees, a personal stipend and one economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the scholarship, as well as an economy flight back to the student's home country at the conclusion of the Scholarship.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship foreign exchange scholarship program of the United States of America, aimed at increasing binational research collaboration, cultural understanding, and the exchange of ideas. Since its establishment, the Fulbright Program has grown to become the largest educational exchange scholarship program in the world, operating in over 160 countries.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme offers scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Students must have outstanding intellectual ability, a commitment to improving the lives of others and leadership potential.

The General Sir John Monash Foundation provides postgraduate scholarships to support outstanding Australians to undertake studies anywhere in the world.

The scholarship’s purpose is to foster Australian leadership, expertise and international networks for the long-term benefit of the country. The Ramsay Postgraduate scholarships were established through the generosity of the founder of the Ramsay Centre, Mr Paul Ramsay. Scholarships are open annually to Australian citizens to pursue graduate study abroad. The aim of the scholarships is to enable coursework and/or research to be undertaken at the world’s best universities and colleges for up to two years.

This scholarship is provided through the Zonta Club of Hobart Derwent Inc on behalf of Area 5 (Tasmania). This scholarship encourages women to pursue undergraduate and master's degrees in business and business related areas and overcome gender barriers from the classroom to the boardroom. The Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship is available to a female student enrolled in either an undergraduate Business degree (must have completed first year Business), or a Masters by coursework program in Business in Semester 1.

Youi want to back students with different skills sets, perspectives and experiences to enable them to add to the uniqueness of what Youi do. To showcase your skills, you'll be required to write an essay about a specific topic and include answers to discussion questions within your analysis. The essay will have a maximum word count of 1,000 words, and the topic for the essay will be advised by Youi.

The Advanced Navigation student grant program presents a chance for an ambitious and high-achieving engineering student to receive financial assistance and support in pursuing their aspiration to become an engineer.

Commonwealth Teaching scholarships support new undergraduate and postgraduate teaching students to meet the costs of their study in exchange for teaching in government schools or government-run early learning settings for a period of time after graduating from their degree.

Scholarships of up to $40,000 per student are available for full-time undergraduate initial teacher education (ITE) students ($10,000 per year for a four-year qualification) and up to $20,000 for full-time postgraduate ITE students ($10,000 per year for a two‑year qualification).

Applications are strongly encouraged from school leavers and career changers who meet the eligibility criteria and who are high-achieving students (with an ATAR of 80 or above or equivalent academic result), First Nations peoples, people for whom English is an additional language or dialect, people with disability, people from regional, rural or remote locations, mid-career professionals or people from low socio-economic backgrounds, who aspire to a rewarding career in teaching.

As part of their community support program, Jade Finance Australia is awarding an academic scholarship for up to $5,000, to support tertiary studies students in advancing their studies.

The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who has been judged to have submitted the most outstanding written response to the selection criteria. Applications must be received by midnight Australian time, on 1 November 2024.

This scholarship has been established by the Economic Society of Australia (Tasmanian Branch) as a tribute to Professor Mardi Dungey.

What does the scholarship provide?

Successful applicants receive $2000 in their first year of study of Economics at the University of Tasmania and a one-year membership of the Economic Society of Australia (Tasmanian Branch).

Who should apply?

Students completing year 12 and enrolling in university.

The scholarship is awarded to all applicants who meet the eligibility criteria.

Since 1989, the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) has been committed to supporting the future of mining professionals by providing financial aid, mentorship and elevated professional development experiences.

Applications for 2025 scholarships are currently open and close on the 6September 2024 with detailed information available Education Endowment Fund Scholarship 2025

With scholarships available for undergraduate level and PhD, there is also a field trip (all expenses covered) with access to industry professionals as mentors and leadership

The online application portal can be accessed through the Education Endowment Fund scholarship (EEF).

The AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship is awarded to students studying an agriculture-related undergraduate degree or a Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths/Finance (STEM) degree with relevant majors which align to agriculture.

In partnership with industry sponsors, the AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship is an initiative supporting students enrolled in full time study at an Australian university by providing:

  • A bursary of $5000 per year for the final two years of your degree
  • Professional development workshops
  • Annual industry work placements aligned with the scholar’s areas of interest and their sponsor’s industry
  • Opportunities to network and gain knowledge at a range of industry events.

Diversity scholarships

The Pinnacle Foundation provides scholarships to young LGBTIQ+ Australians who meet the following criteria – Australian citizen or permanent resident (proof required during application stage); at least 18 years of age and younger than 27 years of age have achieved good or reasonable scholastic results given your circumstances; will be undertaking full-time studies; and identify as a member of the LGBTIQ+ community.

The Australian Veterans' Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT) manages a range of scholarships and bursaries for the children and grandchildren of Australian ex-serving men and women. To be eligible students must be: the child, stepchild, foster child, or grandchild of an Australian ex-serving veteran; an Australian citizen or permanent resident; enrolled, or planning to enrol in a full-time course at an Australian university, TAFE or registered training organisation; in receipt of, or eligible to receive, Centrelink payments including Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY, Austudy or an accepted means-tested Commonwealth government payment.

Larsen Jewellery recognises the need to support and educate young adults wishing to begin a career, or further their studies in jewellery, design or visual arts.

The Diamondport Jewellers Design scholarship Program is for an individual who displays eagerness to learn all aspects of design with a particular interest in jewellery design.

Anania Jewellers is offering a scholarship of $7,000, to go towards the University or TAFE tuition fees of one individual, for either a jewellery or jewellery design related course, or a design or visual arts related course.

The American Australian Association provides scholarship and grant opportunities for Australians looking to study in the United States.  The scholarships and exchanges champion progress, creativity and expression, providing opportunities to young Australian leaders to undertake transformational study, research and professional or artistic development.  There are opportunities for Undergraduates and Graduates (Masters, Ph.D. or Postdoctoral Research) and funds range from US$5,000 to US$40,000.

ATSE’s Elevate: Boosting women in STEM program aims to address gender inequities in STEM through fostering more women and non-binary led industry-academia collaborations in applied research and business, growing professional skills of women in STEM and propelling women and non-binary people into leadership.

The Elevate program provides:

  • A scholarship
  • Access to events and networking
  • Mentoring
  • Wellbeing support during scholars’ university studies

Elevate scholarships are awarded across three categories – Undergraduate, Postgraduate Research and Leadership. The program is funded by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources and the Department of Defence.

Applications for Elevate opened on the 1st of May 2024 and will close at 5:00pm (AEST) on Friday the 30th of August 2024.

The origin of Ling is one of love, passion for connection and learning languages and Ling want to unite the world by connecting people from different cultures.

The Ling Scholarship 2024 supports students accepted into study abroad programs outside of the U.S., Canada, Australia and the UK with scholarships from $500.

Scholarships for Semesters 2024-2025 are open for applications. Apply by July 15th, 2024.

The Australian Seniors Aged Care Futures Grant Program is a $5,000 lump-sum grant offered annually to one student.

Students can apply if they’re enrolled full-time in an accredited Australian tertiary education institution and studying for a certificate, diploma, degree, or traineeship in evidence-based care within the following areas:

  • Aged care;
  • Aged care nursing;
  • Dementia care;
  • Disabilities care; or
  • Any other courses leading to similar careers as an aged carer (subject to approval).

Applications are currently open until 31 October 2024, with the grant being awarded in February 2025. This is currently an annual grant, with applications for the 2025 grant opening on 15 February 2025.

BCG Australia and New Zealand have a proud history of supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Their First Nations Internship and Scholarship Program is designed to recognise outstanding talent and to provide the tools to grow both personally and professionally.

They are looking for driven, curious students who are excited by a challenge and want to have a positive impact on their communities.

The successful scholarship recipient will receive $20,000, an 8-week internship and a mentor through the remainder of their studies.

Applications are open now and will close 12pm, Friday 26 July 2024 (AEST).

GlobalHealth Education’s Healthcare Education scholarship for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples provides financial support to a health student who experiences financial disadvantage and is now open for applications. The scholarship award money can be used for tuition fees, learning materials, course equipment and travel costs.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  1. Apply by 28 February 2025;
  2. Be eligible for entry into a bachelor’s or master’s program at an Australian university and either be enrolled or have received an offer for a healthcare bachelor’s or master’s degree by the 30th of April 2025;
  3. Be of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, identify as Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and be accepted as such by the community in which you live or have lived; and
  4. Reside in Australia as at the time of application for the scholarship.

Created to assist in your personal and professional development, the $5,000 Australia Student Explorer Grant will be offered as a one-time payment to the selected candidate. This can be used to support your overseas studies or work experience or preparing for an overseas job to help you achieve your greatest potential as a globally-minded student.

The Catherine Bonnes AM Scholarship has been established by the Broken Hill & District Hearing Resource Centre Inc. to assist deaf and people who are hard of hearing, to further their education by undertaking post-secondary studies.

The Scholarship consists of financial assistance towards a degree at an accredited Australian university, college of advanced studies or other such intuitions deemed appropriate by the Scholarship panel.

Scholarship applications close on the 30th June and 31st December each year.

The ACS Foundation have launched the Women of STEM Scholarship Programme to provide opportunities for young women in STEM.

The scholarships are open to female students entering their first year of a relevant STEM degree in 2025 at an Australian University and provide the successful candidates with financial grants of $5,000 per year for the life of their University degree (maximum of 5 years).

Applications open on the 18th December 2024 and close at 5pm (AEDT) on the 7th February 2025.

Access scholarships

Access scholarships are awarded based on the financial needs of a student.

The Seize the Day Educational Scholarships help with post-secondary education costs for young Tasmanians impacted by cancer. The scholarships give Tasmanians aged 16-25 undertaking post-secondary education who have been affected by a cancer diagnosis or the diagnosis or death of an immediate family member (parent/guardian, sibling, spouse/partner, child), you are eligible to apply.

The SSI Allianz Refugee scholarships have been created to minimise the financial barriers experienced by people from a refugee or asylum seeker background as they participate in the NSW, VIC and QLD education system. If you are a student planning to study/currently studying at our Rozelle Campus in NSW, you may be eligible for this scholarship.

Are you considering a move from regional or remote Australia to commence your first year of tertiary studies (Certificate IV and above) within 12 months following completion of Year 12 (or equivalent)?

You might be eligible for a payment starting from $3,000 up to $5,000 from the Tertiary Access Payment (TAP).

Moving away from home can be expensive and the TAP helps ease the costs for eligible school leavers moving to study. The TAP can help pay for things like rent or bond for accommodation, household bills, groceries, textbooks, or other study supplies.

At RJ Living, we are committed to helping students achieve their educational goals and providing students with the resources and support they need to succeed in their academic pursuits.

The RJ Living scholarship provides a one-time reward of $1,000 to pay for tuition, books, computers, room, and board, or any education-related expense.

This scholarship will be open to both undergrad and graduate students who are attending an accredited university within Australia.

Following a collaboration between The South Channel Garden Club and Five Bob Farm at Birchs Bay, the South Channel Garden Club is launching two scholarships to pave the way for green-fingered students to study for a career in fields related to horticulture or plant science.

What does the Scholarship provide?

Up to $3,000 a year, for a full-time, three-year course (Maximum of $9,000).  A pro rata equivalent applies for part time studies.  Industry mentoring will also be a key part of the programme.

Who should apply

The scheme will be open to South Channel residents or those with links to the area and is open to year 12 school leavers, existing or potential University of Tasmania students and TAFE students, in horticulture, plant science or a related field. It may also embrace those who are already in the workforce and considering a career change.

The Gowrie Bursary derives from a fund that was set up in 1943 to maintain research scholarships in perpetual memory of those Australian men and women who gave their lives for their country in the Second World War.

The Gowrie Bursary is available to students undertaking a graduate research program at any Australian or international university. The bursary is currently valued at up to $8,000 per annum.

The Award is available each year to Australian citizens who:

  • are past or present members of the Australian Defence Force (whether permanent or Reserve) or are lineal descendants of such members (see Section 18. Definitions); and
  • are able to demonstrate financial hardship; and
  • have completed a Bachelor Degree with Honours (AQF1 Level 8) or equivalent (AQF Level 9 Extended) and have graduated from a university or recognised tertiary institution in Australia or overseas; and
  • have applied for, been accepted into, or are a continuing student in a Higher Degree Research program at any Australian or international university.

Are you thinking about starting a teaching degree? You may be eligible for a Commonwealth Teaching Scholarship.

The Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships Program provides up to $40,000 to new undergraduate and up to $20,000 to new postgraduate teacher education students.

In return for a scholarship recipients need to teach in government schools or government-run early learning settings after finishing their degree.

Scholarships are available over five rounds from 2024 to 2028 with up to 1,000 scholarships per year to be offered

Tertiary Access Payment

The Tertiary Access Payment (TAP) is a one off payment of up to $5,000. It’s to help eligible students with the cost of moving to study. This is for study after you’ve finished year 12 or equivalent.
