Limitless Learning

Empowering children’s voice through the use of a co-design model.

What is the project?

In community centres, galleries and museums in the North, North-West and West Coast of Tasmania, Limitless Learning brings together staff from participating institutions and young people from local schools to jointly construct activities for future visitors that are child-friendly and spark the curiosity of families.

The project works in conjunction with Children’s University Tasmania and is funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund, Tasmanian Freemasons Benevolent Fund, Jetty Foundation and Cuthill Family Foundation.

Since the program commenced in 2023, eight organisations have now launched new learning experiences, including Burnie Regional Museum, Devonport Regional Gallery, Eric Thomas Galley Museum, Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre, Hive Tasmania, Launceston Tramway Museum, Low Head Pilot Station Maritime Museum and National Automobile Museum of Tasmania.

Aims

The objective of Limitless Learning is to improve educational outcomes in the North, North-West and West Coast of Tasmania by enriching learning opportunities through three independent strategies:

Quality

Improving the quality of extracurricular learning opportunities.

Engagement

Increasing the number of hours children engage   in extracurricular learning.

Collaboration

Collaborating with nine or more community organisations to enhance skills in co-creating ongoing inclusive, family-friendly experiences.

Testimonials

"The most memorable thing I did was take part in the Limitless Learning workshops run by the Tramway Museum. It ran for a couple of months, and we had to find better ways for children to learn about the history of my suburb, Invermay, and the tram system it used to have in the olden days." - Violet, Grade 4 student, Launceston Tramway Museum

"In my opinion, this exercise has been a win-win situation. The older folk, being grandparents, have enjoyed the prospect of nurturing the children and we were happy to pass on our experience and knowledge to the youngsters. The youngsters also had some major 'wins'. Jesse set up his 'snack bar' and the young people took full advantage of the food and drink/rewards. Claire and Jesse set up an atmosphere of fun and adventure that empowered and gave the youngsters every opportunity to express their thought and opinions, and actively sought their feedback. As a result of this atmosphere, the youngsters displayed a high level of self-confidence and spontaneously and unconsciously acted as a team." - John, volunteer, Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre

"It’s really good to see things from the children’s perspective." - Jill Holland, volunteer, Low Head Pilot Station

"Children and families have so many ideas and new things to experience in the Gallery.” - Katrina, parent, Devonport Regional Gallery
