UniGO: Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll travel in a group of 35 students. Two University of Tasmania staff members with experience in, and connections to, your destination will accompany you, along with our local partners. Students will come from across the range of courses offering the unit, making it a great way to meet new people.

Our partners will organise safe and comfortable local transport.

You’ll mostly stay in twin-share, same gender accommodation. This will be a mix of hotels and University dormitory accommodation with some of our host partners. You can nominate, and pay and additional fee, to have your own room for the trip.

There will be a wide variety of great food on offer. Our partners will choose eating places that cater for standard food intolerances.

Students with elective space in eligible degrees, and who have completed at least two units or 25 credit points by end of semester 1 (2025), can apply to enrol in the UniGO (HOS201).

  • If you are unsure about eligibility, or if UniGO will fit in your study plan, contact a Student Adviser:
    1. Visit the Appointment Hub and select "Book an appointment"
    2. Scroll down and select "Student Adviser -  College of ..."
    3. If you have insufficient elective space to enrol in UniGO (HOS201) ask your Student Advisor if you are able to make changes to your study plan by:
      1. Changing your Semester 2 planned units OR
      2. Rescinding credit

Funding for this initiative depends on eligibility criteria set by The Australian Government.

  • UniGO is supported by the Australian Government under the New Colombo Plan. To qualify for a fully funded place in the program, you must meet the NCP Mobility Round Guidelines : see Student Eligibility (section 4.2) and Age Requirements (4.3).
  • The Guidelines stipulate that 70% participants are between 18 and 28 years of age. This leaves us with a 30% allocation for mature aged students, which is approx. 35 places, so we do encourage you to still apply.

If you do not meet the NCP Mobility Round Guidelines, are an International student, or Permanent Resident, you will need to pay a supplementary fee (minimum $3850) to cover these expenses. However, depending on your circumstances, you may also be eligible to apply for financial support.

No. You’ll undertake a range of group experiences and facilitated activities delivered by our academic staff and our in country partners.

Unfortunately not. You will be required to complete pre-departure, in-country and post-travel learning and assessments. This will not allow for additional time to travel.

Students with Learning Access Plans are encouraged to apply and we will do our best to accommodate students who require accessible transport and accommodation. We encourage you to get in touch with us to discuss your circumstances at global.opportunity@utas.edu.au

Scholarships

  • A UniGO Financial Support Scholarship is available to students who require additional financial support to cover costs such as passport, visa, and the required Working with Vulnerable people check. For students facing exceptional financial hardship, further support for travel essentials and/or cost of living expenses will be provided on a needs basis. Applications can be submitted through the Scholarship office once your UniGO application has been submitted. Applicants will be required to provide information about their personal/financial circumstances.
  • UniGO participants may also able to apply for other financial support including the OS-Help loan and the University of Tasmania Study Abroad and Exchange Scholarships

  • If you receive payments from Centrelink (such as Youth Allowance) you may be eligible to receive these payments whilst overseas, however, it is recommended that you contact Centrelink to verify your eligibility and any conditions.
