Itinerary Overview: South Vietnam
  • Can Tho: The largest city in the Mekong Delta, where rivers and canals form the backbone of daily life. Experience the Cai Rang Floating Market, engaging with vendors practicing sustainable trade and plastic waste reduction initiatives. Hosted by Can Tho University, you'll work with Vietnamese students on climate change adaptation, sustainable agriculture, and water conservation, learning how locals are addressing mangrove restoration.
  • Explore the Mekong Delta’s diverse ecosystems, visiting floating farms, organic rice paddies, and aquaculture initiatives promoting sustainable fisheries and climate-resilient crops. Learn about agroforestry and permaculture techniques, and join a cycling tour through the countryside, witnessing the impact of rising sea levels and sustainable solutions in action.
  • Soc Trang: home to many Khmer ethnic communities, where you'll learn about indigenous agriculture, traditional farming, and integrated mangrove-aquaculture systems. Experience community-based climate change adaptation in Cu Lao Dung district, triple rice cropping in My Xuyen, and bird watching in the Lung Ngoc Hoang nature reserve.
  • Cu Chi: Explore the Cu Chi Tunnels, a historical site where former battlegrounds have been transformed into preserved forests and agricultural land. Learn about Vietnamese herbal medicine, permaculture techniques, and biodiversity conservation while enjoying a hands-on cooking experience at the Spice Garden.
  • Tay Ninh: From the Cao Dai Temple, a stunning spiritual site promoting religious harmony, to the Núi Bà Đen (Black Virgin Mountain), the highest peak in Southern Vietnam, experience breathtaking views, sacred temples, and rich biodiversity.
  • Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon): A dynamic metropolis where modern development meets historic charm. From eco-conscious cafés, rooftop gardens, and green architecture projects, learn about Vietnam’s push toward renewable energy and sustainable city planning with local students from Van Lang University. Explore historical landmarks including the War Remnants Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Ben Thanh Market, then catch a Vietnamese cultural show at Saigon Opera House.
  • Daily language lessons will enhance your cultural immersion, helping you better understand and engage with the people you meet.
Our partner Universities

Engagement with local University partners is a focal point of the trip and interactions include formal learning opportunities, such as seminars and lectures, as well as immersive learning via field visits to research sites.

Hosted by Can Tho University and Van Lang University, you will engage with local students, participate in learning activities around organic farming and agroecology, mangrove reforestation & conservation projects, and rice production processes. You will also experience campus life through walking and cycling tours, as well as visiting local attractions.

Our community and not-for-profit partners

You’ll visit a diverse range of environmental sustainability initiatives delivered by not-for-profit and community groups and, wherever possible, we will introduce you to University of Tasmania Alumni and Australian volunteers working in-country.  Your study tour will conclude with a final celebration event where you will share your learning and reflections, experience cultural activities and, of course, enjoy a final shared meal together.
