Itinerary Overview: North Vietnam
- Hanoi: Begin your journey in Hanoi, the vibrant capital of Vietnam, where history and modernity intertwine. Wander through the atmospheric Old Quarter, visit the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, and experience a traditional Water Puppet Show. Savor authentic farm-to-table Vietnamese cuisine and learn about market demand, technology, urban planning, pollution and agri-policymaking with local students from Vietnam National University of Agriculture.
- Ninh Binh: Travel to Ninh Binh, often called "Ha Long Bay on land," for a closer look at Vietnam’s spectacular limestone karsts and lush landscapes. Take an eco-friendly boat tour through the stunning Trang An Landscape Complex, cycle through golden rice fields, and visit the Hoa Lu Ancient Capital and Hang Mua Cave.
- Thai Nguyen: A province known for its sprawling tea plantations and rich ethnic diversity. Visit the Hao Dat Tea Plantation to learn about sustainable tea farming, explore the Museum of Cultures of Vietnam’s Ethnic Groups, and participate in a traditional handicraft workshop, such as weaving or pottery, while engaging with local artisans and students from the Thai Nguyen University Of Agriculture and Forestry.
- Cat Ba Island: a hidden gem in the Gulf of Tonkin where you will kayak through the tranquil waters of Lan Ha Bay, explore the lush biodiversity of Cat Ba National Park, and snorkel or dive in marine-protected areas. Contribute to local conservation efforts and learn about aquaculture and aquatic resources management at the Research Institute for Aquaculture No 1.

Engagement with local University partners is a focal point of the trip and interactions include formal learning opportunities, such as seminars and lectures, as well as immersive learning via field visits to research sites.
Hosted by the Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA) and Thai Nguyen University Of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF), you will engage with local students, participate in learning activities around organic farming and agroecology, mangrove reforestation & conservation projects, and tea production processes. You will also experience campus life through walking and cycling tours, as well as visiting local attractions.
Our community and not-for-profit partners
You’ll visit a diverse range of environmental sustainability initiatives delivered by not-for-profit and community groups and, wherever possible, we will introduce you to University of Tasmania Alumni and Australian volunteers working in-country. Your study tour will conclude with a final celebration event where you will share your learning and reflections, experience cultural activities and, of course, enjoy a final shared meal together.
