The University may award the following types of honorary academic titles
The University appoints individuals to adjunct positions to support an active relationship with an academic or non-academic from another organisation, an individual with a specific role or expertise, or a former staff member who maintains an active involvement in the University’s endeavours after ceasing University employment. Adjunct appointments are aimed at enriching the academic work of the University.
The essential criterion is whether the appointment benefits the strategic priorities of the University. Adjuncts may be involved in a range of activities, including but not limited to:
- research projects;
- publications;
- research thesis supervision and mentoring;
- contributions to postgraduate or undergraduate coursework teaching such as guest or occasional lectures/demonstrations;
- professional experience placement supervision; and
- development workshops for staff, students and/or external community members;
The contributions made may extend beyond learning and teaching, and research. Appointees may also be involved in activities such as:
- providing strategic advice;
- mentoring staff;
- building partnerships;
- delivering public lectures and addresses; and
- fostering government, industry, business, and community connections, and involvement in teaching development projects and/or funding applications.
Individuals are appointed to clinical positions to support an active working relationship with specialist clinicians from external organisations. Appointment to a position is aimed at enriching University academic programs by involving clinical professionals in teaching and learning and/or research activities. Clinical appointees may be involved in a range of activities, including but not limited to:
- research projects;
- publications;
- research thesis supervision and mentoring;
- contributions to undergraduate or postgraduate coursework teaching;
- professional experience placement supervision;
- public lectures; and
- workshops with staff, students and/or community members.
The University appoints individuals to associate positions to support and enrich the work of the University. This is achieved by involving individuals who can make an active contribution, but who do not otherwise have some ongoing relationship with, or recognition from, the University.
The title of University Associate may be awarded to a broad range of community members, including but not limited to:
- former University staff who have an ongoing relationship with the University;
- recently completed HDR candidates or postdoctoral fellows who maintain an active connection with the University;
- individuals who are not University staff members, such as laboratory managers, local council managers, or librarians making an active contribution to the work of the University;
- members of industry or community organisations connected to the University; or
- other individuals making an active contribution to the strategic priorities of the University.
For detailed high-level policy principles related to Adjunct, Clinical, and University Associate titles, please refer to the Academic Promotions, Honorary and Adjunct Titles Policy.
It’s important to note that this Policy does not apply to the nomination approval and conferral of the following titles and awards:
- Honorary Fellowship;
- Emerita/Emeritus Professor; and
- Higher Doctoral Degrees.
More information is available at Honorary Academic Titles Procedure (%asset_summary_1437736)
- Individuals from outside the organisation who have demonstrated merit and experience.

Regarding holding multiple adjunct statuses within the University, although it is not a common occurrence, each situation is reviewed separately and decisions are based on individual assessments.
In reference to visiting scholars, the previous centralised process has been discontinued. Instead, if such individuals meet the policy criteria, they are now categorised as a University Associate.
