Experience a week as a marine biologist

A Practical Introduction to Temperate Marine Biology

Experience 5 days on picturesque Maria Island on the Tasmanian East Coast, exploring issues threatening biodiversity as well as the productivity of the marine system. Climate change, invasive species, pollution, debris and their associated social and economic impacts will be covered.

The unit is open to 24 students and is designed to engage, challenge, and inspire you through a hands-on marine science program.

This experience runs from Monday, 21 April to Sunday, 27 April 2025.

Applications close at 11.59pm on Monday, 24 February 2025. Applications received after this date and time will not be accepted.

What's included

Imagine receiving a place in a unit valued at over $3,000 - and it's completely HECS-free. Your only contribution to the course is $525, thanks to the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), which is helping cover the cost of the field trip.

The $525 field trip contribution fee covers the following:

  • Hobart airport transfers*
  • Your accommodation in Hobart on the first and last night**
  • All meals
  • Transport from Hobart to Maria Island return, including ferry crossings
  • Accommodation on Maria Island
  • Hire of all required diving and survey gear

This unit, A Practical Introduction to Temperate Marine Biology, is an introduction to our Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science.

*For interstate students only. Please note airfares are excluded
**Accommodation on the first and last night is only included for students who live 30 minutes or more by car from Hobart

    Snorkelling is a key activity for sampling reef fish communities during the Maria Island experience. While prior snorkelling experience is not essential, you are ranked on your overall marine-related experiences.
